Manchester City advanced to the round of 16 of the Champions League with a 1-0 win over Olympiakos, while Liverpool suffered a rare defeat on their own turf
Phil Foden scored the only goal of the game for City in one of the evening’s early kick-offs, but nevertheless the result sends Pep Guardiola’s side through the knockout stages of Europe’s premier club competition.
Liverpool were the other English side in action, and they suffered a shock 2-0 defeat at the hands of Atalanta, denying them the chance of qualification to the knockout stages on the night. Goals from Josip Ilicic and Robin Gosens gave the Italian side a crucial three points, putting them level with Ajax, who beat FC Midtjylland in the other game in Group D.
A great response from Atalanta, who of course, suffered a 5-0 defeat when these two sides met on Matchday 3.
The other early kick-off saw Borussia Monchengladbach enjoy a comfortable 4-0 win over Shakhtar Donestsk.
Robert Lewandowski scored his 71st Champions League goal of his career in Bayern Munich’s 3-1 win over Salzburg, while goals from Eden Hazard and Rodrygo were enough for Real Madrid to get a crucial win over Inter Milan.
Porto toppled Marseille in France, while no-one could break the deadlock in the game between Atletico Madrid and Lokomotiv Moscow.
