England boss Gareth Southgate says he’s determined to see a response from his side as they prepare to host Iceland in the UEFA Nations Cup on Wednesday night (Match Betting- England 1/6, draw 6/1, Iceland 16/1).
The Three Lions go into the encounter at Wembley on the back of a disappointing 2-0 defeat at the hands of Belgium on Sunday.
With England seeing their chances of reaching the Nations League finals next year vanish, Southgate has called for his side to dust themselves down and go again against Iceland.
“We have got to deliver a performance in response to losing to Belgium and we want to finish this autumn period well,” Southgate told reporters.
“The players are keen to do that. They want to get back out at Wembley and put on a good show for everybody and that’s what we have to focus on.”
England will have to do without Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson and Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling who have both been ruled out of Wednesday’s game due to injury.
Southgate is expected to give the likes of Tottenham’s Harry Winks, Arsenal’s Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham (3/1 – first goalscorer) more game time, while City midfielder Phil Foden is also tipped to feature.
Likewise Iceland are expected to make changes with manager Erik Hamren stepping down after this match at Wembley.
Everton’s Gylfi Sigurdsson and Burnley midfielder Johann Berg Gudmundsson are just two of Iceland’s senior players to have already returned to their respective clubs.
