Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang produced a man-of-the-match performance to help Arsenal overcome Chelsea 2-1 in the FA Cup final, handing the Gunners a record-extending 14th victory in the competition.
It was Chelsea who got off to the perfect start when they took the lead just five minutes into the Wembley contest through Christian Pulisic, who showed some great footwork in the box before dinking the ball over Emiliano Martinez.
Despite conceding early, Arsenal still looked dangerous going forward and they were presented with an opportunity to get level on the 28th minute when Cesar Azpilicueta, who went off injured minutes later, brought down Aubameyang in the box.
After a lengthy VAR check, the Gabon international dispatched the ball into the back of the net, sending Willy Caballero the wrong way, to level things up at 1-1, which is what the score was at half time.
Mikel Arteta’s men continued to threaten after the break and they took the lead in the 68th minute when Aubameyang produced a sublime finish in the box, lifting a shot over the on-rushing Caballero to put the north London outfit 2-1 ahead.
In bagging his second of the game, the 31-year-old added his name to the history books as he became the first Arsenal player to score twice in an FA Cup final since Reg Lewis in the 1950 final.
Chelsea’s hopes of an equaliser were dampened in the 73rd when Mateo Kovacic was sent off after picking up two yellow cards, the second of those looking very harsh for a challenge on Granit Xhaka.
Arsenal were able to see out the remaining minutes and clinch a record-extending 14th FA Cup trophy, while they have also qualified for the group stage of next season’s Europa League.
The Gunners (66/1 – Premier League 2020/21 Outright) will head into the new Premier League campaign, which starts on September 12 full of momentum and Arteta, who has his first trophy as a manager, will be hoping his side can strengthen during the transfer window.
