The Travelers Championship, which gets underway on Thursday, is a star-studded PGA Tour event that is set to feature the seven highest-ranked players in the world – and 10 of the top 11.
Rory McIlroy (12/1 – Outright), Justin Thomas (11/1) and Bryson DeChambeau (12/1) have been jostling for favouritism for the TPC River Highlands shootout – the third tournament in the Tour’s revised post-lockdown schedule.
McIlroy and Thomas will relish the chance to open their shoulders at a River Highlands layout which encourages attacking golf. McIlroy closed with a 64 in the 2017 Travelers and opened with the same score in 2018, but failed to seriously contend on either occasion.
Thomas, tenth at Colonial and eighth in the Heritage over the last fortnight, may be more appealing to punters. He was third in the 2016 Travelers before he had even won a Stateside PGA Tour event. He tees up this week as a 12-time Tour champion and Sunday’s closing 63 at the Harbour Town Links has sent him to Connecticut full of confidence.
Joaquin Niemann (30/1) is another player that the betting community will probably have their eye on for the Travelers. The cocksure Chilean fired weekend rounds of 63 and 65 for fifth place in the Heritage and he can hit the ground running at River Highlands, where he finished fifth last year. Niemann showed with a six-shot Greenbrier triumph in September that the heat of battle does not frighten him one jot.
Brooks Koepka, seventh in the Heritage, has sadly had to withdraw here.
