Khabib v Ferguson – A match-up destined to NEVER happen?

For a second, I’m sure we all thought that we would see the unbeaten lightweight champion, Khabib Nurgmagomedov against No.1 Contender, Tony Ferguson on April 18thHowever, history has repeated itself and another obstacle has stopped these two talented fighters from entering the Octagon together.

On March 31st, it was announced that Khabib would be stuck in Russia due to a COVID-19 travel ban, which has forced Dana White (UFC President) to rebook a new headline event. This is the UFC’s 5th attempt, to make the Khabib Ferguson fight happen.

The Khabib Nurgmagomedov vs Tony Ferguson History

  • 2015: Khabib Injured
  • 2016: Tony Injured
  • 2017: Khabib has medical issues related to his weight cut
  • 2018: Tony Injured
  • 2020: Khabib stuck in Russia due to the COVID-19 pandemic travel ban

Despite the news and venue still to be confirmed, UFC249 will presumably go ahead on a private island (according to Dana White). No.4 Contender, Justin Gaethje will step in for Khabib Nurgmagomedov and headline UFC249. The co-main event will feature a run back of two former strawweight champions. As “Thug” Rose Namajunas will be looking to revenge her loss against Jessica Andrade who dethroned the former champion with a slam-dunk victory at UFC237. The fight card will also feature former NFL player Greg Hardy and former heavyweight title contender Francis Ngannou. See Full Card:
